CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to all students who nominated for the 2007 Scholarship Program for Musically Outstanding Students (MOST 07). The following students have been short listed to audition on their first, second and/or third instrument: Maggie Geale, Liam Richards, Anna Ryan and Sarah MacDonald. We wish them well in their auditions.

INTERIM REPORTING
Interim school reports will be issued to students on Monday 26 March. On the following Tuesday 03 April, parent/teacher interviews will be held from 3.30pm to 6.30pm in the school gym. Please take this opportunity to meet your child’s teachers.

SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT
It is with much pleasure that I present an Executive Summary of our 2006 School Annual Report as an insert in this newsletter. This report provides valuable information for Education Queensland and members of our school community on the achievements of our school against declared systemic and school priorities as outlined in our 2006 Annual Operational Plan. The report highlights our strengths, and identifies areas for development and improvement for our school during 2007 and beyond. A complete copy of the School Annual Report is available at any time for your perusal at the school office or library.

STUDENT SAFETY
Thank you to all parents and members of our school community who continue to support road safety awareness by adhering to the road rules and observing speed limits during the peak “drop off” and “pick up” times. However the problem of people (other than Education Queensland staff), parking in the school grounds has increased to a point whereby students are at risk of injury or harm. Therefore, according to Education Queensland policy, parents and caregivers are requested not to park in the school grounds to “pick up” or “drop off” students. Our school-based police officer will be reminding people of this policy over the coming weeks. Thank you for your assistance in supporting this policy and caring for the safety of our students.

P&C EXECUTIVE
The P. & C. Executive for 2007 is:

  • President: Linda Buxton
  • Vice President: vacant
  • Secretary: Sue Whyborn
  • Treasurer: Brenda May
Thank you to all parents who have taken on these roles for 2007. We look forward to continuing the close working relationship with the P&C to benefit our students and the community.

FROM THE ARTS DEPARTMENT
Thank you to every one who answered the call for magazines and lidded plastic containers. These items are still very much needed and welcome. If you have any old, clean towels / rags, they too would be most appreciated.
On Thursday, 8th March, Oliver Findlay-Britt, Anna Ryan and Lydia Paine attended a call back singing audition for the 2007 Creative Generation. Creative Generation is a large inter-school performance that incorporates singing, dancing, instrumental music and dramatic pieces. It will be held at the Concert Hall, QPAC in May. Congratulations to Ollie, Anna and Lydia for a job well done.
Good luck to the students auditioning for Qld MOST (Musically Outstanding Students).
The year 11 and 12 excursion is getting closer. Students are getting excited about the chance to see the amazing variety of artworks that can only be found in the Brisbane Metropolitan area. The chance to examine work by up and coming, as well as established artists, is an opportunity not to be missed. Finally, the end of term one is rapidly approaching and assessment items are coming due if not already due. Make sure to get them in on time and complete.

GAP NEWS
It has been another massive couple of weeks out at GAP! Huge enrolments and a growing waiting list have kept GAP staff busy as new students settle in and find their feet.
Recently, students attended a leadership day at Glendyne and enjoyed a BBQ at Burrum Heads to welcome all newcomers. The engineering class is progressing well and are almost finished making a set of futsal goals. Many thanks to the ex-student who donated a car and the Youth Support Coordinator who donated futsal materials.
All in all, everyone is enjoying the variety and spontaneity offered by the GAP.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS HOMESTAY PROGRAM
Welcome to our new Homestay Coordinator, Kerri Long, who will be at school on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. She can be found in staffroom 5. Thank you to those families who have expressed interest in hosting an international student. We are currently reviewing our host family register and will be in touch with families in the near future.
Hosting an international student in a family environment can provide an enriching cultural experience for both the student and the host family. If any families are interested in participating in the program, homestay information booklets are available at the school office. An information and orientation session will be held in Term 2.

Please contact Kerri Long on 4125 5440 for further details.

VISITORS FROM SINGAPORE
Visiting Heads of Department (IT, English, SOSE, Maths and Language) from Singapore visited our school this week to engage in professional dialogue with administration, staff and students. We also gained information about professional standards, work programs and working conditions of teachers in Singapore. A worthwhile visit.

FROZEN TEA TOWELS????
All cooking classes are being taught correct storage of foods during lessons. HOWEVER, there are many students doing the wrong thing and this COULD lead to the possibility of food poisoning. Students are bringing ingredients along in eco friendly ‘green’ shopping bags as well as a variety of other bags now available. This is great, but on arrival at school they are dumping the whole bag in the fridge regardless of whether the items need to be in the fridge or not! Last week when we had a clean out we found - yes, a frozen tea towel! It was in one of the green bags up on the top shelf jammed against the cooling unit. With so many green bags in the fridge, the cold air circulation is restricted. Parents, please assist by placing items for fridge storage in a small plastic bag which can be put into the fridge on arrival at school. The green bag with the remainder of the items can then be placed in the students’ cupboards. Thanks for your continuing support.

LONGEST KICK CHALLENGE
On Wednesday 21st February, approximately forty students from years 8 to 12 challenged ex-Brisbane Lions player and AFL ambassador for Queensland, Richard Champion, to a football kicking competition. To win this challenge you had to be able to kick a football further than Richard Champion. Caleb Ryan was able to do this by kicking 57 metres, which was 5 metres more than Richard’s kick of 52 metres. The female winner was Amy Duke. Both these students won a mini football signed by Richard Champion. While in Hervey Bay, Richard and Anthony McDonald (AFL Development Officer for Wide Bay) visited Urangan State High School as well as other primary and high schools to promote AFL.

BUSINESS IS ICY AT URANGAN SHS
Each Business Technology One class has been very busy forming their own social club. They have named their clubs and developed a logo which they will insert on documents they create for their club.
Each class has been fundraising once a week for their club by selling fruit juice icy cups to the teachers and students. These icy cups have been very popular on the recent hot days and they also comply with Education Queensland’s new Smart Choices Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy.
A big thank you goes to Lex Garner of the Hervey Bay Woodcraft Club for coming up to the school and giving students a very informative talk on running a club. Students appreciated hearing about a ‘real’ club and were able to see how relevant their studies have been.
