Ann Byers Retires

2/04/2015

Ann Byers leaves us today after a wealth of teaching experience.  She graduated in 1975 from Kedron Park Teachers’ College and started teaching year 5 at Chermside State Primary School in 1976.  She transferred to Central State Primary School, Charters Towers and was there for 1976-77 after this Ann resigned to have her first child and she worked for the Health Department for over 3 years.

Ann, ever the adventurer, then made the change to secondary school and started at Charters Towers State High School on 02/04/84 (31 years ago today).  She became the acting Subject Master Social Sciences in 1992 and co-ordinated the art and manual arts faculties.
On 5 July 1993 Ann was appointed as Subject Master, later changed to the title of Head of Department.
She came to USHS at the beginning of 1998 and has been a valued Head of Department ever since.
Ann has many fond memories of the many (maybe thousands) of young lives she has helped to shape over her career and she still believes she made the right choice of profession.
“There is nothing quite like the feeling in a classroom when students are enjoying what they are doing and learning and there is that visible ‘light bulb moment’ when the teacher can see the understanding on their faces – what a buzz!”
