The Literacy Short Course is a one-unit senior subject designed to strengthen practical reading, writing and communication skills for everyday life, work and further study. It supports students who have found English challenging and provides a pathway to meet the literacy requirement for the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). While it does not contribute to an ATAR, it recognises a student’s ability to use literacy confidently in real-world contexts. Across the topics of Personal Identity and Workplace Contexts, students develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and multimodal communication. They work with practical texts such as emails, reports and workplace documents, learning to identify purpose and audience, separate fact from opinion, and communicate clearly. Assessment includes two school-designed tasks and may include a reading comprehension exam. This course is practical, supportive and confidence-building. It equips students with the literacy skills needed for employment, further training and everyday life, helping them achieve the literacy requirement for their QCE and move forward with confidence.
