PublishingPageContent

Year 9 Mathematics develops more advanced thinking and independence. Students work with linear and nonlinear relationships, expand and factorise expressions, and solve equations that model real-world situations. They use graphs to understand patterns of change in areas such as finance, science and everyday problemsolving. Students apply Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry in practical contexts, and strengthen their ability to analyse and interpret data. The focus is on reasoning, justification and tackling more complex problems with confidence in preparation for senior mathematics pathways.

Unit 1: Algebra and Cartesian Plane

Students will extend on their index laws and apply them to calculations involving scientific notation. Students will use algorithms to explain geometric constructions. Students will revisit Pythagoras and be introduced to Trigonometric ratios to solve problems.

Unit 1 Assessment

Monitoring Task Week 2 - Apply Algorithms Exam Week 5 - Algebra Exam Week 10 - Pythagoras Trigonometry and Cartesian Plane

Unit 2: Measurement and Geometry

Students will solve problems involving direct proportion ratio and scale and communicate their findings. They will apply enlargement transformation to images and objects. Students will have to recall and apply Trigonometry to show similarity. They will solve problems involving surface area and volume of right prisms and cylinders.

Unit 2 Assessment

nvestigation Week 1 and 2 - Geometry

Exam Week 10 - Measurement

Unit 3: Money and Algebra

Students will solve problems involving liner and quadratic functions. They will apply algebra skills to expand and factorise quadratics expressions. Students will investigate the effect of varying components of a quadratic equation using digital tools.

Unit 3 Assessment

Exam Week 8 - Money and Algebra Guided investigation Week 9-10 - Quadratics

Unit 4: Statistics and Probability

Student will investigate how sampling techniques can be used to support conclusions. They will compare numerical data sets by calculating summary statistics and comparing shapes of distribution. Students will investigate compound events and assign probabilities. They will conduct probability experiments and compare results.

Unit 4 Assessment

Exam Week 4 - Statistics Assignment Week 8 - Probability

Informers – Analyse data and explain mathematical thinking clearly.

Coordinators – Follow logical steps and organise solutions carefully.

Innovators – Solve problems creatively and design new approaches.

Makers – Apply formulas and build accurate mathematical models.

Year 9 ACE Mathematics

Year 9 ACE Mathematics extends students in preparation for Year 10 Advanced Mathematics. Students work deeply with quadratic expressions, simultaneous equations and exponential relationships, and analyse graphs in greater detail. Trigonometry, statistics and probability are explored with increased rigour, and students are expected to justify their reasoning clearly. The course builds strong algebraic fluency, precision and logical thinking for future study in Advanced Mathematics, Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics.
