Humanities and Social Sciences in Years 7–10 invites students to explore the storyof our world — how people have lived, how societies have changed, how places shape the way we live, and how decisions made by individuals, communities and governments affect the future. Drawing on the four strands of History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business, this learning area helps students investigate the past, understand the present and imagine what comes next. It builds curiosity about people, cultures, environments, systems and ideas, while encouraging students to ask questions, look at evidence, think critically and see the world from more than one point of view.
At our school, students in Years 7 and 8 study all four strands, giving them a broad foundation across the humanities, while in Years 9 and 10 History remains compulsory and Geography, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics and Business become elective pathways for deeper study. Across these subjects, students learn that the humanities are not just about facts and dates — they are about power, justice, leadership, place, identity, change and opportunity. Humanities and Social Sciences helps students become informed citizens, thoughtful decision-makers and confident young people who are ready to understand the world and make their mark on it.
