On the night of September 2nd, 19 Grade 12 students and 4 of our staff members braved the rain and other elements to participate in this year's Homeless Awareness Night. Open to grade 10, 11 and 12 students, this is the third year this event has run.
The event challenges students to consider the struggles that many in our society face and what it means to have to make do with whatever their groups can forage together. During the evening, our groups compete, but through competition, they also learn team work, compassion and empathy. We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Anthony from Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre who spoke about Homelessness on a local level.
About half of our participants made it through the night in their cardboard dwellings, with the rest having to surrender to the weather and seek shelter in the Hospitality Block. Thank you to all students who attended and to all staff who supported.
