This week the Year 10 Pre-Senior Child Care class has been studying areas of development, stages of play and types of play. Students have been “playing" in class to analyse the importance of it in early childhood.

Studying this subject prepares students for Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. This 2 year course starts in Semester 2 of Year 10 and continues through Year 11 and 12.  Students complete their competencies in the classroom and partake in 160 hours of practical experience, in local child care centres, over the two years. Completing the course ensures they leave school with a qualification and gives them the opportunity to seek a career in the growing Early Childhood sector straight out of school, without any further study.

Some of our current Year 11 and 12 students are already working in the industry, whilst completing their study at school. We see many familiar faces, former Urangan SHS childcare students, in the local centres as we visit our current students.

On successful completion of all units within this qualification, participants:

• May receive a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (dependent on the success of completion)

• Can seek employment as a qualified Educator.

• Could benefit from enhanced tertiary options as the CHC30121 Certificate lll and may contribute to secondary school students ATAR if applicable.

• Secondary school students may be awarded up to 8 QCE points.

• Diploma eligible as CHC30121 is a pre-requisite for CHC50121 Diploma of early childhood education and care.
